Premiere of the stage version of the acclaimed British-Nigerian author Ben Okri’s books about the boy Azaro.
Azaro is an abiku, a spirit child, torn between the earth and the spirit world. While he struggles with his parents in the ghetto where he lives, he is constantly subjected to insidious attacks from the spirits who want him to return to their world. Why should he stay with the humans with all the suffering?
The play was adapted for the Dramatic Theatre by Oladipo Agboluaje, playwright at the National Theatre in the UK.
The production is a co-production between The National Black Theatre of Sweden and Dramaten, a continuation of the collaboration that began with The Top of the Mountain. It is directed by Josette Bushell-Mingo, an actor and director who is also the Principal of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
The play is based on the books The Famished Road and Songs of Enchantment by Ben Okri.
